Introduction to Vocabulary
Start of Class:
Anchor person, highest ranking student in class: Kio tsu ke (attention).
Anchor: Shomen-ni (face front of room).
Anchor: Rei (bow).
Anchor: Sensei ni/Shihan ni/ Senpai ni (face your teacher), rei.
Sensei (teacher): Haji me masu (let this class begin).
ALL: Onegaishimasu (here I am please teach me).
End of Class:
Anchor: Kio tsu ke. Shomen-ni. Rei. Sensei-ni. Rei. Recite the dojo kun
ALL Doju Kun (Motto):
As a TMAA Karate Student, I will always speak health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone I meet. I will use my self-defense to protect myself, my loved ones, and to defend the innocent. I will seek to praise the best in others as I continue to perfect the best in myself. And if I stumble, I know, that every day, in every way, I’m getting better, and better, and better.
Sensei: Owadimasu (let this class end).
ALL: Domo Arigato Gozai Mashta: Thank you very much for what you have given me.
Sensei: Doitashimashite (take what I have given you, go home and cook it. Kaizan (you are dismissed).
Hai Shihan/Sensei/Sempai: Yes teacher/assistant. Used in response to any command given.
